SEEKING CONTRIBUTIONS FOR THE PRODUCTION OF …

SPECTACLE

Narrative. 16mm. Production: Spring/Early Summer 2022

Set in the days following the November 2020 Election, SPECTACLE follows Elan, an aspiring documentarian (think John Wilson, minus the clout) suffering from post-truth era malaise while shooting behind-the-scenes of an agenda-driven cable program about businesses overcoming COVID.

Everything he films is predictably random, until he discovers in one of his videos a secret capable of shattering the shallow worldview of his influencer roommate. Appalled already by her materialistic habits & casual indifference toward the social strife that compels him, cultural contempt fuses with morose jealousy to result in a choice Elan makes for the sake of his camera with consequences reaching far beyond anyone’s control.

———

A wry, pitch-black satire on the modern age, SPECTACLE is Taxi Driver meets John Wilson, by way of equal parts Project X & Rear Window.

DIRECTOR STATEMENT

“When our desires overrule truth, we exist in the realm of propaganda. Following this code is the death of art.” - Sophie Corra, editor of Dasha Nekrasova’s awesome Scary of Sixty-First.

yikes. but well put, Ms. Corra.

I don’t cite this quote only shoutout Scary of Sixty-First (awesome movie ppl should watch), but rather to call out what reads as acute summarization of my desire to make this film, SPECTACLE, an absurdist psychological thriller that fully embraces transcendental style while repurposing it for a fresh, confrontationally brash, examination on media ethics in our post-truth, (post?) Trump era.
